What Is Real Christianity?

Christianity is one of the six major world religions. Approximately three billion people claim to be Christian, however, the real number of Christians is known only to God.

Although Christianity is considered to be a religion, I believe that it is different from the other world religions.

First, for those of us who try to live it, it isn't a religion at all. It's a way of life. It's a way to live that works. That has been my experience for me.

Next, Christianity is the only "religion" where the head of the church is divine. Jesus Christ did not claim to be a man; he claimed to be the Son of God and God. He didn't come to get us to die for Him; he came to die for us so that we might be reconciled with the Father.

God created us in His image, but more importantly, He created us to have a relationship with Him. It all started in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. Once Eve was tempted by the serpent, she and Adam were thrown out of the garden, and sin and death became a part of the world.

Christianity is a religion of peace. We are taught to love one another and to love God. We are also taught to love our enemies, a concept that is completely alien in any other major religion.

Jesus told us that as His followers we would be persecuted. We were to be proud of that. He was persecuted, and as His followers, we would also be persecuted and were to expect that.

I was born into a Christian family. My family practiced a form of worldly Christianity that was nothing like true Christianity. As an adult in search of truth, I decided to study all of the major religions because I genuinely wanted to know what the truth was. I also studied the archeology and history behind the religions. I wanted facts, not opinions, and I wanted the truth, not more opinions.

It has been a long and arduous journey. It wasn't that difficult to return to Christianity, but trying to live as a Christian has been very hard. There are many reasons.

When the rest of the world wants to fight, to seek revenge for past wrongs, it's hard not to get involved in that. The more I read my Bible though, the more I have learned to see past much of what goes on in the world to see that many of these people screaming for revenge, or peace, or equality, or a whole host of other things really aren't looking for any of these things. They want power.

God gave us free will. We have the right to choose. This is one of the reasons I rejected all of the other religions. Although in Judaism God offers freedom, it doesn't go far enough. It is a legalistic system that is hard to live under. Judaism has also been superceded by Christianity. Rather that have humans live under a legalistic system where we would constantly fail, we have been offered grace. (Grace is an undeserved gift.)

The sum total of Christianity is this, and it may be found in two verses from the Bible:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

What this means is that we are to accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and put our faith in Him. We have to believe that He is the only one that can save us from the sin that has invaded the world.

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. (Ephesians 5:1-2)

We are to be like Christ. That means that we follow the most important commandment, which is to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves. (Matthew 22:37-29) (Mark 12:29-31)

Loving others isn't about who they are. Loving others is about who we are, and when we love others, even when we feel they don't deserve it, we are set free from unforgiveness, hatred, resentment, and a whole host of other baggage.

The bottom line is that Jesus came to set us free. I urge you to read the Bible. Find out what it really has to say. Look to Jesus, not Christians, to know Christ.

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)
